Half of Twitter is collectively bricking itself over the head right now over how Anthony Horowitz said that Idris Elba is “too street” to play James Bond. Now, I know that the media loves a good fight (and I do, too, from time to time), but let’s be honest:
Anthony Horowitz is wrong about how awesome Idris Elba would be, but this is a non-issue. Calm down
You know how I know why? It’s because this controversy erupts every. single. damn time that the discussion of a new James Bond comes into play. Need I remind you, dear audience, that half of you said very similar things about this guy.
Daniel Craig was similarly lambasted with comments like that before the premiere of Casino Royale. Oh, Bond can’t be blonde. He doesn’t look the part. There’s no flair there. Then we all saw the movie, which wiped the slate clean and restored James Bond to glory after the silliness of Die Another Day. It’s very important to realize that the actor playing him can be important, but it’s even more important to point out that there are a few elements that people miss when it comes to what makes a great James Bond movie, namely:
- The Script
- The Villain
- The Bond Girls
Therefore, it doesn’t make sense to judge any actor before you see a movie. Even an awesome renaissance man like Idris Elba can’t save 007 if we have a far-fetched disaster like Moonraker or many of the Roger Moore films. Give us a Bond that we can believe in and we will support him. Give us gadgets that are being tested out right now. Show us Bond Girls that can be a genius or a femme fatale… and then have them bang Bond senseless. And most importantly, give us god-tier villains like Christoph Waltz or Mads Mikkelsen that can transport these adventures into a new era.
That’s the reason why we watch. That is what millions of movie fans deserve.
